The Oilers are 5-0-1, Leon Draisatl and Connor McDavid are tied for the league lead in goals and “The Real Deal” James Neal leads the league in goals. Did you predict that before the season started? No, you didn’t you filthy liar. Even the most diehard Oilers fan wouldn’t have tagged Neal for leading the Rocket Richard race.
I’m ashamed to say just about every dire warning I gave my pool compatriots before the season started were straight up lies. I predicted terribly slow starts and subpar seasons for Brayden Point, Patrik Laine, David Pastrnak, Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. Dustin Byfuglien’s been making noise about returning too. Like, it’s shocking how accurate I was about being wrong. I didn’t commit it to paper, but I had no faith in Carter Hart either and he’s come out of the gate strong.
Watching the Leafs play the Wild last night the announcers were really roasting the Wild over their team’s advanced age and their ugly cap situation. I was wondering if this was inspired by Minnesota’s slow start so I checked some of the season previews and yep – everyone called it. They’re caught under albatross contracts so they can’t even tank properly. Any franchise players out of the draft would still be surrounded by well-paid aging pylons for several years.
It’s hard to get a handle on who’s doing well and who isn’t so far – like the Rangers have played 3 games. I can definitively say some teams are especially Buffalo who are 5-01. There’s a surprising amount of talent in Buffalo and Carter Hutton’s fast start might be the last thing they needed to put it all together. Fantasy players out there – buy low right now on Victor Olofsson!
