Vegas Expansion Draft Rumors

expansion draft rumors

There are plenty of Vegas Expansion Draft rumors circulating around Vegas’ official selections, which will be announced live tonight at the NHL Awards (8:00pm EST). More than half of the selections have been leaked, with details of many side deals flooding Twitter at the same time. Until the selections are made official, here are some of the top rumors and leaks.

Vegas Expansion Draft Rumors

Anaheim Ducks

Rumor: Vegas will select D Clayton Stoner in the expansion draft and will receive defenseman Shea Theodore in exchange for not taking Sami Vatanen and Josh Manson.

Boston Bruins

Rumor: Defenseman Colin Miller will be headed to Vegas.

Calgary Flames

Rumor: Defenseman Deryk Engelland will be selected by the Golden Knights. Engelland will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1. It’s believed that general manager George McPhee will not re-sign Engelland. He could be one of several picks that will end up hitting free agency July 1 since some teams don’t have attractive options McPhee is interested in retaining.

Chicago Blackhawks

Rumor: It had been reported that the Golden Knights would receive defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk in exchange for taking center Marcus Kruger in the expansion draft. As of last night, it seems as though Marian Hossa and his $5.275 million will go onto LTIR due to a serious allergy condition that will keep him out of action for the entire 2017-2018 season. In light of that development, it seems as though Kruger may remain in Chicago for the time being. It’s expected that TVR will be the one taken by Vegas.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Rumor: The Blue Jackets will send its first-round pick and a prospect (not Sonny Milano or Pierre-Luc Dubois) to Vegas in exchange for McPhee not selecting Josh Anderson, Joonas Korpisalo and Jack Johnson. It is believed Vegas will take William Karlsson in the draft.

Dallas Stars

Rumor: Vegas will select center Cody Eakin.

Detroit Red Wings

Rumor: Vegas will select forward Tomas Nosek. Many are surprised the Golden Knights are not going after goaltender Petr Mrazek, and some would have expected defenseman Xavier Ouellet could be an option, but Nosek is the name coming out of Detroit.

Edmonton Oilers

Rumor: Defenseman Griffin Reinhart will be a Vegas Golden Knight this evening.

Florida Panthers

Rumor: The rumor is that Vegas somehow will end up with both Jonathan Marchessault and Reilly Smith. That would be quite an accomplishment for the Golden Knights. One would have to assume a pick or asset will be flipped to Florida in exchange for getting such quality forwards.

Los Angeles Kings

Rumor: The name out of Los Angeles is defenseman Brayden McNabb. The Kings were hopeful Vegas would get Dustin Brown or Marian Gaborik off the books, but McNabb makes a lot of sense for McPhee and the Golden Knights.

Minnesota Wild

Rumor: Vegas will select (and has re-signed) RFA forward Erik Haula and will receive prospect Alex Tuch in exchange for not selecting Matt Dumba, Marco Scandella and Eric Staal in the expansion draft.

Montreal Canadiens

Rumor: The initial rumor was that Brandon Davidson would be the one headed to Vegas, but now it appears as though it will be defenseman Alexei Emelin. Charles Hudon and Davidson would make much more sense, but perhaps Montreal is planning to send something to Vegas to make this pick happen.

Nashville Predators

Rumor: The Vegas Golden Knights will select forward James Neal. It’s unknown at this time if Nashville tried to make a deal with McPhee in order to keep Neal in Music City.

New York Islanders

Rumor: It was believed that general manager Garth Snow had reached an agreement with McPhee that would have involved New York sending its first-round pick (15th overall) in this year’s draft to Vegas in order for the Golden Knights to select Nikolai Kulemin in the expansion draft. Mikhail Grabovski’s name was thrown in the mix as well, but it’s unclear at this point what the actual deal is. This would be a major feat for Snow and the Isles. However, more recent updates indicate that goaltender Jean-Francois Berube will be the player Vegas selects in the expansion draft, but that that selection will be part of a larger deal between the two clubs.

New York Rangers

Rumor: Oscar Lindberg will be the one headed to Vegas. It’s unknown at this point if a deal was made to keep Antti Raanta in New York.

Ottawa Senators

Rumor: Vegas will select defenseman Marc Methot. It is believed Vegas will then flip Methot to another team, such as Toronto, Montreal or Dallas. Many teams have interest in the veteran blue liner. This will be a big loss for the Sens.

Philadelphia Flyers

Rumor: Pierre-Edouard Bellemare will be selected in the expansion draft. Rumors have circulated today that Flyers general manager Ron Hextall was considering moving the #2 overall pick in this year’s NHL Entry Draft to Vegas, but one would have to assume that deal would have included Vegas taking on the contract of defenseman Andrew MacDonald. It’s still a possibility, though.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Rumor: Pittsburgh will send Vegas a pick in order for the Golden Knights to select goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in the expansion draft.

San Jose Sharks

Rumor: The Vegas pick from the Sharks seems to be defenseman David Schlemko.

St. Louis Blues

Rumor: David Perron will be the one headed to Vegas.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Rumor: It is believed Vegas will select defenseman Jason Garrison in the expansion draft and will acquire the rights to Lightning prospect Nikita Gusev.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Rumor: Brendan Leipsic will be headed to Vegas. Toronto has expressed interest in defenseman Marc Methot, so there could be more involved here if the two teams make a deal after the trade freeze is lifted tomorrow.

Winnipeg Jets

Rumor: While there are no indications about which player Vegas will select tonight, it is believed Winnipeg has made a deal with Vegas in order to keep defenseman Toby Enstrom in Winnipeg.
