Toronto lands John Tavares with 7-year deal

John Tavares has signed a seven-years, $77 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Wow. Toronto’s greatest need might not have been a forward, but getting Tavares is certainly a huge addition to the team winning the sweepstakes pushes them from being an emerging competitor to a serious Stanley Cup contender. Adding  one the best player on the planet to a young core of forwards that includes Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander gives the Maple Leafs an offense that’s both explosive and deep. The Maple Leafs can use Matthews and Tavares on separate lines to force opposing defenses to spread out or they can attempt to use them together on occasion to overwhelm opponents.

Born in Missisauga, Ontario, Tavares is now playing for his hometown team and reportedly took a huge discount to do so.

In the end, the Toronto Maple Leafs are the big winners. John Tavares is the biggest free-agent signing ever made by any hockey club. This move changes the landscape of the entire NHL.

Tavares has scored 272 goals and 621 points in 669 games. His performance on both ends of the ice is something to marvel at and it has made him one of the very best players in the entire NHL over his career. Once granted exceptional player status in the OHL and taken with the first-overall pick in the NHL in 2009, Tavares’ career has been nothing short of successful. It’s even featured a few gold medal wins with Canada. The exception to his career success, however, has been the postseason success – arguably the most important measure of success.

With the being,  Tavares should his hometown team achieve playoff success that has not been there for decades. No pressure, buddy!

Every moves this guy makes will be under a microscope now. It takes special character to just deal with that alone. I expect Tavares thrive
