Steve Yzerman is officially the Red Wings’ GM

The Detroit Red Wings have officially named Steve Yzerman as the franchise’s new general manager and vice president.

Yzerman is returning to the franchise that drafted him back in 1983. He captained the Detroit Red Wings to Stanley Cup championships in 1997, 1998, and 2002. After his retirement, he served as the executive director of Team Canada to guide them to gold medal victories in the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. He also served as the general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2010-18 and brought them into a new era of competitiveness. Ken Holland, who was the Red Wings’ general manager, will serve as the senior vice president. Holland also signed an extension, signalling that he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
