Phil Kessel officially signs eight-year deal with Maple Leafs
I have to admit, I thought Phil Kessel was headed to NHL free agency next summer… I was dead wrong. Today, just before the 2013-14 NHL season kicks off the Toronto Maple Leafs organization made a bold statement signing their superstar to an eight-year extension worth $64 million.
Many fans at the center of the hockey universe which is Toronto will find every way to criticize the the contract. This is the main reason I thought Kessel would leave town because of the pressure he has to deal with on a day-to-day basis.
For me, Phil Kessel is a franchise player who is receiving appropriate market value for his skill set.
Kessel is entering the time of his career at 25 years old and has been money to score 30 goals a season and produce at a point-per-game clip. This type of deal signals that Toronto is interested in trying to win and willing to be a consistent contender for the Stanley Cup. I commend the franchise for getting what could’ve been a distraction for the whole season out of the way this early.
