After becoming the first player in 100 years to record back-to-back hat tricks in the first two games of the season, Washington Capitals superstar, Alex Ovechkin was the obvious choice to be named the NHL’s first star of the week.
“When you score in the first game the pressure is off,” Ovechkin said. “If you like to score goals, obviously it’s important to have a hot start because in the future you’re going to feel confident. Seven goals in just two games is simply insane for any hockey player. Even for Ovechkin, who is the greatest goalscorer of his generation.
“I think he had something to prove,” Coach Barry Trotz said. “There’s people questioning if he’s still got it. I think he’s a proud athlete. I think that’s probably the No. 1 thing, and then I think he and Kuzy have gotten a little bit of chemistry with Vrana on that line”
This blazing fast start puts the critics who say Ovechkin may have lost a step in their place that is for sure.
Ovechkin now has 19 career hat tricks, which tied Peter Bondra for the Capitals franchise record. His seven goals give him 565 for his career, which is 22nd on the all-time list of NHL regular-season goal scorers.
It’s really a no-brainer to try and get pieces of this line onto your daily fantasy roster right now. Evgeny Kuznetsov has assisted on all seven goals. while the youngster, Jakub Vrana Is making the most of his opportunity to play with these two superstars early in his NHL career.
All eyes will be on Ovechkin tonight when his Washington Capitals faceoff against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
What will Ovechkin do next?
