Official NHL Vegas Expansion Draft Protection Lists

Protection Lists

As part of the Vegas Expansion Draft, all 30 existing NHL clubs were required to submit a list of protected players in accordance with the Vegas Expansion Rules. The lists were to be comprised of either seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie (7-3-1) or eight skaters and one goalie (8-1), and each team was required to expose at least two forwards, one defenseman and one goalie by a specific set of standards, as established in the expansion rules. Those lists, referred to as Protected Lists or Protection Lists, were made public as of 10:30am EST this morning. Vegas’ selections will be announced at the NHL Awards on June 21.

Vegas Expansion Draft Protection Lists

Defensemen: Hampus Lindholm, Cam Fowler, Kevin Bieksa (NMC)
Goalie: John Gibson

Notable Exposed Players: Sami Vatanen, Josh Manson, Patrick Eaves (UFA), Jonathan Bernier (UFA)

NOTE: It is believed Anaheim has a deal in place with the Golden Knights that will send Sami Vatanen to Vegas. Now the story seems to be that Anaheim has reached an agreement with Vegas that would allow the Ducks to keep Vatanen and Josh Manson in Anaheim.

Arizona Coyotes ( 8-1 )

Forwards: Tobias Rieder, Anthony Duclair, Jordan Martinook, Nick Cousins (RFA)
Defensemen: Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Alex Goligoski (NMC), Connor Murphy, Luke Schenn

Defensemen: Rasmus Ristolainen, Jake McCabe, Nathan Beaulieu
Goalie: Robin Lehner

Notable Exposed Players: Zach Bogosian, Matt Moulson, Linus Ullmark, Josh Gorges, Dmitry Kulikov (UFA)

NOTE: It’s very surprising to see Bogosian exposed, which means there could be a deal in place that would allow Buffalo to retain his services.

Calgary Flames ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Mikael Backlund, Michael Frolik, Micheal Ferland (RFA), Curtis Lazar (RFA), Sam Bennett (RFA)
Defensemen: Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton, T.J. Brodie

Defensemen: Justin Faulk, Ryan Murphy, Trevor Carrick
Goalie: Scott Darling

Notable Exposed Players: Lee Stempniak, Klas Dahlbeck, Cam Ward, Eddie Lack, Joakim Nordstrom, Andrej Nestrasil (RFA)

Chicago Blackhawks ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Patrick Kane (NMC), Jonathan Toews (NMC), Marian Hossa (NMC), Artem Anisimov (NMC), Richard Panik, Ryan Hartman, Tomas Jurco (RFA)
Defensemen: Brent Seabrook (NMC), Duncan Keith (NMC), Niklas Hjalmarsson (NMC)
Goalie: Corey Crawford (NMC)

Notable Exposed Players: Trevor van Riemsdyk, Marcus Kruger, Dennis Rasmussen

NOTE: It is assumed that Chicago would like to send Marcus Kruger and his $3.083 million cap hit to Vegas; in order to make that happen, the team could part with Trevor van Riemsdyk and additional picks/prospects.

Colorado Avalanche ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, Matt Duchene, Blake Comeau, Sven Andrighetto (RFA), Matt Nieto (RFA), Rocco Grimaldi (RFA)
Defensemen: Erik Johnson (NMC), Tyson Barrie, Nikita Zadorov
Goalie: Semyon Varlamov

Notable Exposed Players: Mikhail Grigorenko, Carl Soderberg, Calvin Pickard

NOTE: It’s slightly surprising to see Mikhail Grigorenko left off the Protection List, especially in favor of someone like Rocco Grimaldi. That being said, it could be general manager Joe Sakic’s way of sending a message, or his way of enticing Vegas to go for Grigorenko instead of someone like Calvin Pickard. Vegas could consider grabbing the underachieving forward, though Pickard would be a better choice. Don’t count out center Carl Soderberg despite his hefty contract.

Columbus Blue Jackets ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Brandon Dubinsky (NMC), Nick Foligno (NMC), Scott Hartnell (NMC), Cam Atkinson, Brandon Saad, Boone Jenner, Alexander Wennberg (RFA)
Defensemen: Seth Jones, Ryan Murray, David Savard
Goalie: Sergei Bobrovsky

Notable Exposed Players: Jack Johnson, Sam Gagner (UFA), Josh Anderson, Matt Calvert, William Karlsson, Joonas Korpisalo

NOTE: Widespread reports indicate Columbus has agreed to send its first-round pick to Vegas in order to protect players like Josh Anderson, Joonas Korpisalo and possibly Jack Johnson.

Dallas Stars ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn (NMC), Jason Spezza (NMC), Antoine Roussel, Brett Ritchie (RFA), Radek Faksa (RFA), Valeri Nichushkin (RFA)
Defensemen: John Klingberg, Esa Lindell, Stephen Johns
Goalie: Ben Bishop

Notable Exposed Players: Dan Hamhuis, Kari Lehtonen, Antti Niemi, Cody Eakin, Patrik Nemeth, Jamie Oleksiak, Patrick Sharp (UFA)

NOTE: If he remains available (if a deal is not in place), Cody Eakin would be an excellent pick-up for Vegas general manager George McPhee.

Detroit Red Wings ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Henrik Zetterberg, Frans Nielsen (NMC), Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar (RFA), Justin Abdelkader, Anthony Mantha, Andreas Athanasiou (RFA)
Defensemen: Mike Green, Danny DeKeyser, Nick Jensen
Goalie: Jimmy Howard

Notable Exposed Players: Petr Mrazek, Jared Coreau, Niklas Kronwall, Xavier Ouellet, Riley Sheahan

NOTE: One of the biggest surprises with the reveal of the Protection Lists is that Detroit has protected goaltender Jimmy Howard over Petr Mrazek. Both have been inconsistent, but most assumed Mrazek (eight years younger) would be kept safe.

Edmonton Oilers ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Milan Lucic (NMC), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, Leon Draisaitl (RFA), Patrick Maroon, Zack Kassian (RFA), Mark Letestu,
Defensemen: Andrej Sekera (NMC), Adam Larsson, Oscar Klefbom
Goalie: Cam Talbot

Notable Exposed Players: Benoit Pouliot, Iiro Pakarinen, Jujhar Khaira, Griffin Reinhart (RFA), Kris Russell (UFA), Laurent Brossoit

NOTE: Vegas was in contact with pending UFA defenseman Kris Russel; no further news has been reported at this time, however.

Florida Panthers ( 8-1 )

Forwards: Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau, Nick Bjugstad, Vincent Trocheck
Defensemen: Aaron Ekblad, Keith Yandle (NMC), Alex Petrovic (RFA), Mark Pysyk (RFA)
Goalie: James Reimer

Notable Exposed Players: Roberto Luongo, Jason Demers, Reilly Smith, Jonathan Marchessault, Jussi Jokinen, Colton Sceviour

NOTE: Overall, this is one of the most surprising Protection Lists. Players like Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessault were key contributors to the team’s success this past year, and Florida has elected to protect Mark Pysyk over Jason Demers. The team gave up a lot for Pysyk, but it’s still a surprise. The decision to protect James Reimer over Roberto Luongo likely relates to the assumption that Vegas will not be interested in Luongo given his age. All in all, though, Florida produced a very interesting list.

Los Angeles Kings ( 8-1 )

Forwards: Anze Kopitar (NMC), Jeff Carter, Tyler Toffoli, Tanner Pearson
Defensemen: Drew Doughty, Jake Muzzin, Alec Martinez, Derek Forbort
Goalie: Jonathan Quick

Notable Exposed Players: Dustin Brown, Marian Gaborik, Brayden McNabb, Nick Shore (RFA)

Minnesota Wild ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Zach Parise (NMC), Mikko Koivu (NMC), Jason Pominville (NMC), Charlie Coyle, Mikael Granlund (RFA), Nino Niederreiter (RFA), Jason Zucker
Defensemen: Ryan Suter (NMC), Jared Spurgeon, Jonas Brodin
Goalie: Devan Dubnyk

Notable Exposed Players: Eric Staal, Matt Dumba, Marco Scandella, Erik Haula (RFA), Martin Hanzal (UFA)

NOTE: Minnesota general manager Chuck Fletcher likely has a deal in place that will allow the Wild to protect Matt Dumba; however, it was unexpected for Brodin to earn the protection slot over Dumba in the first place. Minnesota stands to lose a very strong player in this draft, so McPhee will have to weigh how valuable an asset he can receive from Minny vs. the value of what Minnesota is willing to pay in order to protect those assets.

Montreal Canadiens ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Max Pacioretty, Jonathan Drouin, Alex Galchenyuk (RFA), Brendan Gallagher, Andrew Shaw, Paul Byron, Phillip Danault
Defensemen: Shea Weber, Jeff Petry (NMC), Jordie Benn
Goalie: Carey Price

Notable Exposed Players: Tomas Plekanec, Alexei Emelin, Alexander Radulov (UFA), Brandon Davidson, Charles Hudon, Andrei Markov (UFA), Al Montoya

Nashville Predators ( 8-1 )

Forwards: Filip Forsberg, Ryan Johansen, Viktor Arvidsson, Calle Jarnkrok
Defensemen: Roman Josi, P.K. Subban, Mattias Ekholm, Ryan Ellis
Goalie: Pekka Rinne (NMC)

Notable Exposed Players: James Neal, Craig Smith, Colton Sissons, Pontus Aberg (RFA)–exempt, Colin Wilson

NOTE: General manager David Poile likely has a deal in place to keep James Neal in Nashville. Some were surprised to see Calle Jarnkrok protected over Pontus Aberg, but Aberg has been deemed exempt from the expansion draft.

New Jersey Devils ( 8-1 )

Forwards: Taylor Hall, Kyle Palmieri, Travis Zajac, Adam Henrique
Defensemen: Andy Greene, John Moore, Mirco Mueller, Damon Severson
Goalie: Cory Schneider

Notable Exposed Players: Mike Cammalleri, Devante Smith-Pelly, Ben Lovejoy, Jon Merrill

New York Islanders ( 8-1 )

Forwards: John Tavares (NMC), Andrew Ladd (NMC), Anders Lee
Defensemen: Johnny Bochuk (NMC), Nick Leddy, Travis Hamonic, Ryan Pulock, Adam Pelech
Goalie: Thomas Greiss

Notable Exposed Players: Josh Bailey, Calvin de Haan, Ryan Strome, Brock Nelson, Casey Cizikas, Thomas Hickey, Jaroslav Halak, Scott Mayfield, Shane Prince

NOTE: The New York Islanders are the only team that elected to protect five defensemen. Ironically, there are still strong defensemen available for Vegas to consider, including Calvin de Haan. That being said, the general assumption is that general manager Garth Snow will send Vegas a first-round pick to keep his forward corps intact (i.e., Brock Nelson, Josh Bailey, etc.). UPDATE: The rumor circulating is that the Islanders reached a deal with Vegas that would send center Mikhail Grabovski and the Isles’ 15th overall pick in this year’s draft to Vegas in order for the Golden Knights to select winger Kikolain Kulemin in the expansion draft. If this rumor is true, this will be one hell of a move by Snow to get rid of two big contracts and keep guys like Calvin de Haan, Josh Bailey, Brock Nelson, Ryan Strome, etc. safe.

New York Rangers ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Rick Nash (NMC), Derek Stepan, Mats Zuccarello, Chris Kreider, Kevin Hayes, J.T. Miller, Mika Zibanejad (RFA)
Defensemen: Marc Staal (NMC), Ryan McDonagh, Nick Holden
Goalie: Henrik Lundqvist

Notable Exposed Players: Antti Raanta, Michael Grabner, Jesper Fast, Oscar Lindberg, Brendan Smith (UFA)

NOTE: The word out of New York is that general manager Jeff Gorton is eager to keep Antti Raanta in Broadway Blue. It’s unclear what Gorton can afford to offer considering the Rangers haven’t had many picks in recent years, but this a story to keep an eye on. It should help Gorton’s chances that there are so many strong goalies available to Vegas.

Ottawa Senators ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Mike Hoffman, Mark Stone, Kyle Turris, Derick Brassard, Zack Smith, Jean-Gabriel Pageau (RFA), Ryan Dzingel (RFA)
Defensemen: Dion Phaneuf (NMC), Erik Karlsson, Cody Ceci
Goalie: Craig Anderson

Notable Exposed Players: Bobby Ryan, Alex Burrows, Marc Methot

NOTE: There was chatter out of Ottawa that general manager Pierre Dorion was trying either to move or buy out Dion Phaneuf’s massive contract prior to yesterday’s deadline. However, with Phaneuf’s exorbitant cap hit and no-movement clause in place, the Sens were forced to protect him, leaving Marc Methot exposed. Though the Sens would love for Vegas to take Bobby Ryan and his $7.25 million cap hit, Methot could be on the way out. That would be a big loss for Erik Karlsson and the Ottawa Senators.

Philadelphia Flyers ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Claude Giroux (NMC), Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, Valtteri Filppula (NMC), Scott Laughton
Defensemen: Shayne Gostisbehere, Radko Gudas, Brandon Manning
Goalie: Anthony Stolarz

Notable Exposed Players: Michal Neuvirth, Michael Raffl, Andrew MacDonald, Matt Read, Dale Weise, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Jordan Weal (UFA), Michael Del Zotto (UFA)

NOTE: The word out of Philly is that general manager Ron Hextall and pending UFA forward Jordan Weal reached a “handshake” agreement prior to the expansion draft. Apparently the two sides are not far from reaching a deal, which could be completed and announced later this week.

Pittsburgh Penguins ( 8-1 )

Forwards: Sidney Crosby (NMC), Evgeni Malkin (NMC), Phil Kessel (NMC), Patric Hornqvist
Defensemen: Kris Letang (NMC), Olli Maatta, Justin Schultz (RFA), Brian Dumoulin (RFA)
Goalie: Matt Murray

Notable Exposed Players: Marc-Andre Fleury (NMC–waived), Carl Hagelin, Bryan Rust, Nick Bonino (UFA), Ian Cole, Derrick Pouliot

San Jose Sharks ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, Melker Karlsson, Jannik Hansen, Chris Tierney (RFA), Ryan Carpenter
Defensemen: Brent Burns, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Justin Braun
Goalie: Martin Jones

Notable Exposed Players: Mikkel Boedker, Joel Ward, David Schlemko, Joe Thornton (UFA), Patrick Marleau (UFA), Paul Martin, Aaron Dell

St. Louis Blues ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Vladimir Tarasenko, Jaden Schwartz, Alex Steen, Paul Stastny, Patrik Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka, Ryan Reaves
Defensemen: Alex Pietrangelo, Jay Bouwmeester, Joel Edmundson
Goalie: Jake Allen

Notable Exposed Players: David Perron, Jori Lehtera, Dmitrij Jaskin, Nail Yakupov (RFA), Carter Hutton, Pettteri Lindbohm

Tampa Bay Lightning ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Steven Stamkos (NMC), Ryan Callahan (NMC), Nikita Kucherov, Ondrej Palat (RFA), Tyler Johnson (RFA), Alex Killorn, Vladislav Namestnikov
Defensemen: Victor Hedman (NMC), Anton Stralman, Braydon Coburn
Goalie: Andrei Vasilevskiy

Notable Exposed Players: Jake Dotchin, Cedric Paquette, Slater Koekkoek, Jason Garrison, J.T. Brown, Andrej Sustr, Peter Budaj (UFA–re-signed to 2-year deal)

NOTE: It’s very surprising to see Braydon Coburn on Tampa’s Protection List. He is not part of this young team’s core, but more significantly, he should not be on the list over yound d-men Jake Dotchin and Slater Koekkoek (especially Dotchin). For a team lacking in defensive depth, it makes little to no sense to leave Dotchin exposed.

Toronto Maple Leafs ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Nazem Kadri, Tyler Bozak, James van Riemsdyk, Leo Komarov, Matt Martin, Connor Brown (RFA), Josh Leivo
Defensemen: Morgan Rielly, Jake Gardiner, Connor Carrick
Goalie: Frederik Andersen

Notable Exposed Players: Kerby Rychel, Brendan Leipsic, Seth Griffith (RFA), Martin Marincin, Alexey Marchenko

Vancouver Canucks ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Daniel Sedin (NMC), Henrik Sedin (NMC), Loui Eriksson (NMC), Brandon Sutter, Sven Baertschi, Bo Horvat (RFA), Markus Granlund
Defensemen: Alexander Edler, Christopher Tanev, Erik Gudbranson
Goalie: Jacob Markstrom

Notable Exposed Players: Brendan Gaunce (RFA), Luca Sbisa, Alex Biega, Ryan Miller (UFA)

Washington Capitals ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Marcus Johansson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Andre Burakovsky, Tom Wilson, Lars Eller
Defensemen: Matt Niskanen, John Carlson, Dmitry Orlov
Goalie: Braden Holtby

Notable Exposed Players: Philipp Grubauer, Nate Schmidt, Jay Beagle, T.J. Oshie (UFA), Karl Alzner (UFA), Justin Williams (UFA), Brooks Orpik, Kevin Shattenkirk (UFA)

Winnipeg Jets ( 7-3-1 )

Forwards: Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little, Mathieu Perreault, Adam Lowry, Joel Armia, Andrew Copp (RFA)
Defensemen: Dustin Byfuglien (NMC), Tyler Myers, Jacob Trouba
Goalie: Connor Hellebuyck

Notable Exposed Players: Marko Dano, Toby Enstrom (NMC–waived), Shawn Matthias, Michael Hutchinson
