The New York Islanders have signed Nick Leddy to a seven-year, $38.5 million contract extension.
I know a few Chicago Blackhawks fans who would have loved to keep Nick Leddy in the fold, as part of the Blackhawks core. However, Chicago’s management group anticipated a big-payday on the horizon for Leddy, a good young defenseman and they were not wrong. Today, the New York Islanders ponied up $5.5 million per-season for the youngster. This is the number that was not affordable for the Blackhawks, who traded Nick Leddy to the New York Islanders in October to free up cap-space.
the New York Islanders gave Leddy a $2 million raise with this new extension. Not to mention, a lot of term. ( which personally I never was a big fan of). Having said this. Nick Leddy has proven to be everything the Islanders wanted in a top-four defenseman since putting on their jersey. Leddy has eight goals and 25 points in 61 outings this season. The good news is, this kid is just starting to understand his potential.
if you are an everyday hockey fan, you know, the New York Islanders have been the talk of the town with their dramatic turnaround. The organization made several key acquisitions this summer. With this signing management is proving they want to keep core players locked up for a very long time. Nick Leddy is young, and has been full of potential since winning “Mr. hockey” in his home state of Minnesota. I just hope the kid continues to produce and does not take it easy now that he has gotten his payday. I enjoyed seeing the resurgence of a historic hockey franchise. Maybe it has something to do with being a lifelong Edmonton Oilers fan and living in the shadow of legends without seeing success for many seasons. Nonetheless, it has been impressive to see Islanders have put together for an on-ice product.
It’s taken years, but I know it can be done. Signing Nick Leddy was a smart move today despite my dislike for the number of years attached to the contract…
