Pierre McGuire might want to take a few shifts off. Or maybe just retire the headset for good.
The NBC hockey analyst took the early lead in the Mansplainer of the Year category during an embarrassing pregame segment with U.S. women’s hockey star Kendall Coyne Schofield Wednesday night.
McGuire, 57, who does his work between the glass for NBC Sports Network’s NHL coverage – reporting between the benches – earned a game misconduct from the viewing public for treating Coyne Schofield like a hockey novice instead of an Olympic gold medalist.
“Tampa’s going to be on your left,” McGuire pointed out to Coyne Schofield as he introduced his first-period partner for the Penguins-Lightning game. “Pittsburgh’s going to be on your right.”
He followed that up by explaining that she wasn’t there to be a cheerleader.
“We’re paying you to be an analyst, not to be a fan tonight.”
Why exactly are you getting paid, Pierre?
Fortunately for Coyne Schofield – who wowed the crowd at the NHL All-Star Game’s Skills Challenge last Friday – she only had to spend one period working with McGuire.
