To be considered amongst the elite teams in the NHL, the key ingredient is consistent goaltending. The Edmonton Oilers are finally getting some, after years of the position being a glaring sore spot.
On Saturday afternoon, Mike Smith turned away 51 of 52 shots in a 2-1 overtime win against Pittsburgh.
Smith was bombarded in every single period of this game. He had to face 18 shots in the first period, 17 shots in the second, and 16 shots in the third. Meanwhile, the Oilers never managed more than eight shots in a single frame. The fact that they won this game is thanks to Smith.
Anybody who is a hockey fan is aware Edmonton has to of the best players in the world. However, the reason for the hot start should be clear. It is the goalies!
This team still needs to find secondary-scoring!
