That works out to a $9.5 million annual cap hit. Before that begins though, Vasilevskiy has one season left on his three-year, $10.5 million contract. These massive, long-term contracts to goaltenders carry with them a lot of risk, but it certainly helps that Vasilevskiy only recently celebrated his 25th birthday. He’s also demonstrated that he’s one of the best goaltenders in the league after finishing third in Vezina Trophy voting in 2018 and winning the award in 2019. It’s going to be tough for the Lightning to stay under the ceiling once this contract kicks in though, unless they make some sacrifices between now and then.
