Even after back-to-back shutout losses, Edmonton still had a 7-2-1 record, so Thursday’s contest against the Capitals wasn’t exactly do-or-die for the Oilers. Still, given Edmonton’s long history of disappointment, any sign of weakness leads to some degree of nervousness.
For a while, it didn’t look like this contest would help ease those Oilers fans’ tensions. The Capitals had a 3-1 lead going into the third period, but the Oilers battled back thanks to the efforts of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid. McDavid had a goal and two assists, which brings him up to 20 points in 11 games. Capitals defenseman John Carlson registered an assist in the contest, so he still leads the league with 21 points in 12 contests.
The bottom six have to do something in terms of points.. or else, it will be the same old story in Edmonton.
