On Tuesday night, New York Islanders defenseman Zdeno Chara tied Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Chelios for the most games played in NHL history among all defensemen. It was Chara’s 1,651st game taking the ice, which is the eighth-most in history among all players. San Jose Sharks forward Patrick Marleau passed Gordie Howe for the most games played last season with 1,779 games played.
Chara was the 56th overall pick by the Islanders in the 1996 NHL Draft. He spent the first few seasons in New York before moving to Ottawa. After four seasons with the Senators, Chara joined the Boston Bruins. It was in Boston that his legend truly took on a life of its own.
