Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the overtime and series-winner in Washington’s 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh Monday night.
Ovechkin had a helper on Evgeny Kuznetsov’s overtime winner to eliminate the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. “I see [Kuznetsov] was over there and I just put the puck in space and he did what he does best,” Ovechkin said. “It feels great. Never been this position before and I’m looking forward to [the conference final].
Kuznetsov, has been the X-factor for the Caps this postseason, with seven goals and 14 points in 12 games. Ovechkin finally has a running mate/supporting cast in the playoffs. For Kuznetsov, this was his first game-winning goal during the 2018 postseason and just his third in 51 career playoff contests. This is a huge moment in Franchise history for the Washington Capitals advancing the Eastern Conference Final for the first time in 20 years! Doing it in style, beating the Pittsburgh Penguins, a task history has shown to be impossible for Washington.
I will caution hockey fans who assume this means Alex Ovechkin will just be handed his overdue Stanley Cup.
Ovechkin is halfway there, but this team can’t afford to lose momentum.
