The Montreal Canadiens have signed Alexander Semin to a one-year $1.1 million contract.
Last season can only be described as a disastrous one for Alex Semin. Semin only managed to register six goals and 19 points in 57 contests with the Carolina Hurricanes. The result? A buyout of the final two years of a seven-year $35 million contract, making Semin a free agent. In most hockey circles, Semin is considered highly skilled but wildly inconsistent. When he does score, it usually makes the highlight reel. I mean, at one point this player scored 40 goals… He averages between 20-30 goals a year for his career (it’s actually a little higher).
With that said, Alexander Semin could be the steal of the summer for the Montréal Canadiens. Low risk, high reward. Maybe Carolina just wasn’t the right fit. It is possible he just went there for a huge payday.
I have a feeling he will prove himself again in Montréal!
